India’s per capita consumption of finished steel has increased to 63 kg in 2015-16 from 58 kg in 2011-12. Crude steel capacity was 121.97 million tonnes but production was 89.79 mt in 2015-16.
The country remained a net importer of finished products.
The Steel Ministry has evolved a concept of developing Ultra Mega Steel Plants to increase crude steel capacity to 300 mt by 2025-26
Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has modernized and expanded its integrated steel plants at Bhilai, Bokaro, Rourkela, Durgapur and Burnpur and special steel plant at Salem.
The crude steel capacity is being increased to 21.4 mt per annum from 12.8 mtpa at plants under SAIL which has also earmarked on modernisation and expansion of its Mines.
Commercial manufacturing has started for supply of 1,200 wagons and rehabilitation of 300 wagons per annum to Railways. fii-news.com
