Nasmyth strengthen Indian partnership
As the world’s aerospace and defence industries gathered in Bangalore for #Aero India 2017 exhibition and air show, #Nasmyth Group, a global engineering solution provider to the aerospace and allied sectors, celebrated the incorporation of its new company in the Indian city.
The inauguration of #Nasmyth India Private Limited (Nasmyth India) further establishes Nasmyth’s presence in India and addresses a growing international need for design engineering expertise within the aerospace sector.
Initially the new company will provide a platform to source engineering and design services for multiple businesses within Nasmyth Group and enhances its core UK skills base to meet growing business demands, said Peter Smith, Chief Executive and Chairman of Nasmyth Group.
“Nasmyth India will deliver leading edge design and engineering services for a vast array of components and equipment which will be manufactured throughout the Group’s extensive worldwide supply chain, including partners in India.
The new company is a huge step forward for Nasmyth Group as it invests further in the development of its operations in India and the company seeks to harness the opportunities to grow its design engineering, systems engineering and intellectual property,” he explained.
Nasmyth Group already has a strong team in India led by local manager, Ravi Kumar, after setting up the Nasmyth liaison office in 2013. The liaison office manages the planning, engineering, production, cost and quality of components produced across India for Nasmyth Group.
In four years, the liaison office has grown to directly manage Nasmyth Group’s extensive network of Indian partners, which together employ more than 1,000 skilled people.
Smith elaborated: “Talk of the skills shortage in the UK has become a reality for us and many others in our industry. It is hard for us to recruit engineers in the UK who are qualified to deliver the challenging level of engineering design and production skills that we require as a growing, leading-edge mid-cap supplier to global aerospace and associated industries.
“The new company will provide a permanent and flexible core resource within Nasmyth Group to support our customers, now and in the future. It represents a big cultural and organisational commitment for Nasmyth Group and is driven by our need to access, train and develop a greater pool of qualified engineers able to meet our business needs.”
With demand forecast to grow across the industry, Nasmyth Group sees that its Indian company has the potential to grow into a stand-alone organisation providing engineering services to customers around the world.
Smith continued, “I have been extremely impressed by the quality of the engineers in India, many of whom study at Indian universities that are often affiliated with UK universities, meaning that we, and our customers, can be confident that the course content, measurement and assessment standards are completely comparable with any other international graduates.”
Nasmyth Group is clear that this expansion of its business is not about replacing UK skills, but is contributing to expanding its pool of expert resources that it needs to continue to deliver for its customers.
Nasmyth Group is committed to growing the UK skills base through the Nasmyth Apprentice Academy and the Group’s support for engineering training programmes.
The extension of the Nasmyth Academy to embrace Indian operations will be a natural development in due course. Encouraged by the industry primes who are investigating similar models, Nasmyth has taken the step to establish a private limited company that will surely be an example that is keenly watched and followed.
Around 80 industry and public sector leaders are invited to a ceremony to mark the inauguration of the new business at the Windsor Manor Hotel, in Bangalore. The ceremonials included the traditional Deep Prajwalan (Lighting of the Lamp), a ceremony, which forms a strong symbol of enlightenment, hope, prosperity and knowledge.
Paul Everitt, Chief Executive of ADS Group, the UK’s national trade association for the aerospace, defence, security and space industries said,of the event: “It is great to be celebrating the global growth of Nasmyth Group in Bangalore today.
“They are a core part of the UK’s internationally successful aerospace industry with a commitment to engineering excellence, innovation and supply chain development. The combination of their aerospace know-how and the design and engineering capability here in India will help deliver the competitive goods and services global customers need. India and the UK are building an ever closer industrial alliance, which can deliver jobs and prosperity for both our nations,” said Everitt.
One million component delivery celebration
Nasmyth also celebrated the scale and success of its operations in India as it accepted delivery in the UK of its one millionth precision machined component manufactured in India.
Nasmyth first established a foothold in India in 2009 and its commitment to develop and align skills in both the UK and India led to a decision to set up a supply chain liaison office in Bangalore.
Following four years of production proving the first part manufactured to full production standards was received in 2013. The liaison office opened in the same year to manage the planning, expediting, engineering, production, cost and quality of components produced by partner companies across India.
These products are delivered to Nasmyth in the UK and are then further processed prior to delivery to aerospace Primes and Tier 1 suppliers worldwide.
Since opening its liaison office, the Nasmyth team has developed and mentored a range of partner suppliers in Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Coimbatore.
The scale of demand for high quality products and the ability of Nasmyth’s Indian suppliers to meet the requirements of Nasmyth’s customers has resulted in a doubling of output from Nasmyth’s Indian suppliers’ year on year. Having shipped 500,000 components during 2016, Nasmyth Group recently reached the milestone of one million parts shipped from India to the UK.
Smith said, “We provide the best quality engineering services and products for our customers and we are delighted to see that production in India has continued to exceed our exacting standards. Nasmyth Group and our partners have achieved many things together, including significantly increasing production and controlling costs. Accepting delivery of the one millionth component from India is a major milestone for the combined team as we, and our customers, see the benefit of Nasmyth’s decision to look to India to complement our UK engineering and manufacturing capabilities. The success is a testament to our partners’ dedicated and hardworking teams in India.”
Between 2010 and 2015 the UK aerospace industry saw production growth of 30% compared to 2% for the UK economy and sustained growth is expected to continue. Meeting this global challenge is a priority for Nasmyth Group and the number of components manufactured in India, which equates to 5% of the group’s total global sales, is expected to grow exponentially as customers continue to recognise the benefits of the Nasmyth approach as they see it to be “in line” with their own strategic business plan.
Smith added, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated his Make in India policy in 2014 to encourage commissioning and manufacturing in India. The policy has been widely hailed as a success and in 2015 the country emerged as the top destination globally for foreign direct investment, receiving US $63 billion. The Nasmyth liaison office does a substantial and successful job of managing our Indian supply chain as we rapidly expand the excellent resources and expert skills that we, and our partners, can make available to our customers.”
Smith concluded “I feel with our unrivalled database, experience and working knowledge of the Indian manufacturing community we are in an excellence position to offer further manufacturing solutions utilising the Indian Supply Chain”.
The Nasmyth liaison team will soon be expanding in to a new purpose built office in Bangalore. It will do so alongside the Group’s newly inaugurated company, Nasmyth India Private Limited. The new company will provide design engineering resources across the Nasmyth Group and was inaugurated at an official ceremony in Bangalore on 13th February. The co-location of the two Nasmyth ventures in India will result in further growth including an office to be established in Chennai and in the sustained development of the excellent relationship between Nasmyth’s UK operations and their Indian partners.
Nasmyth Group’s capabilities include:
⦁ Design and reverse engineering, supported by CAD/CAM and the latest analytical techniques and technologies
