900-km metro network under construction
A total of 5,151 projects worth more than Rs.2 lakh crore were identified and around 4,700 projects worth Rs.1,66,000 crore tendered under the Smart Cities Mission, Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs & Civil Aviation said in an update on 18 August 2020.
Around 3,800 projects amounting to approximately Rs.125,000 crore, viz. 61%, have been grounded and more than 1,638 projects worth over Rs.27,000 crores have been completed, he told a webinar on steel industry organized by CII.
“In order to improve mobility, our cities have completed 215 smart road projects and 315 projects are near completion,” said Puri.
Approximately, 900-km metro network is under construction in 27 cities while about 700-km is operational in 18 cities, he said.
On average 13,000 tonnes of reinforced, structural, stainless and high tensile steel is consumed per km in a metro project.
“Keeping with our commitment to making our cities more livable and sustainable, 70 projects related to smart water and 42 projects under smart solar have been completed.”
Steel is being used extensively in Airport Terminal buildings for the roof structure and as support to glass façade, informed Puri, who also leads the Civil Aviation Ministry
Puri explained that the enhanced use of steel in terminal buildings, pre-engineered structures leads to ease in work and speedy construction.
Airport Terminal Buildings will use Rs.1,905 crore (approx) worth of steel in the next five years, having used Rs.570 crore in the past three years.
Fifteen new Terminal buildings are planned at a cost of Rs.15,000 crore over in the coming five years, 12-15% of component costs from which will be for steel.
Overall, the Minister sees about 158 lakh tonne steel and an estimated 692 lakh tonne cement to be consumed in the construction of all the houses sanctioned under PMAY(U).
Nearly 84 lakh tonne steel and 370 lakh tonne cement would have already been consumed in houses grounded and or completed so far, Puri told
the webinar on ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat: Fostering Steel Usage in Housing & Construction and Aviation Sector’.
So far, 1.07 crore PMAY(U) houses across 4,550 urban cities and 67 lakh other houses have been grounded and 35 lakh units have been delivered. PMAY(U) housing demand is 1.12 crore houses.
He assured steel of demand from the housing, urban and civil aviation projects as the industry progress on with a target of 300-tonne/year capacity by 2030.
This was backed by the massive urbanization plans, he stressed.
“Our urban centres and cities are hubs of economic productivity, infrastructure, culture, and diversity. 40% of our population or 600 million Indians are expected to live in these urban centers by 2030,” assured Puri. #housing #steel #civilaviation #airports #urban #metros /fiinews.com
