R&D of fly ash continues
NTPC Ltd has developed Geo-polymer coarse aggregate from fly ash which will help in replacing natural aggregates reducing the impact on the environment.
NTPC’s research project on the production of Geopolymer coarse aggregate from fly ash has met the statutory parameters of Indian Standards and was confirmed by the National Council for Cement and Building Materials (NCCBM).
NTPC has developed Geo-polymer coarse aggregates as a replacement to natural aggregates. The technical parameters as per Indian standards for its suitability to use in concrete works were tested by NCCBM, Hyderabad and the results are in the acceptable range.
The development by NTPC’s R&D achievement in expanding the horizon in ash utilisation.
Demand for these aggregates is about 2,000 million metric tons a year and will help reduce the impact on the environment caused by natural aggregates mined from stone quarries.
Coal-fired thermal plants produce approximately 258 MMT of ash every year, 78% of which is used and the balance dumped in ash dykes. NTPC is exploring alternate ways to utilise the remaining ash which includes the current research project to generate aggregates using more than 90% ash.
The Geo-polymer aggregates, which is an eco-friendly ash component, are extensively used in place of cement in concrete as the binding agent.
The Geo-polymer helps in reducing carbon emission and has great potential for reducing water consumption on construction sites. #projects #infrastrucure #infrastructure #construction /fiinews.com
