Businesses cannot succeed in a society that fails to protect environment
Dr Karen Landmark, Director – Business Development & Strategy, Greenstat and Chair of the Board, Greenstat Asia, has advised Indian business community to ensure restoration of ecosystem which will help to improve productivity and capacity fo ecosystems to meet the needs of the society.
An area larger than Denmark is lost every year and over half of the world’s wetlands have disappeared in the last century, she told a Webinar on Ecosystem Restoration organized by the Environment Committee of PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry on the occasion of World Environment Day 2021 on 5 June 2021.
“Ecosystem loss is depriving the world of carbon sinks like forests and peatlands, at a time humanity can least afford it,” said Dr Karen.
Ecosystem restoration has to be undertaken at a massive scale globally which means repairing billions of hectares of land, an area greater than China or the USA, she pointed out, emphasising the need to Act urgently since the next 10 years are important in bending the curve on biodiversity loss.
Dr Karen Landmark said that Restoration of Ecosystems is important from business point of view since for every dollar invested in restoration, at least seven to thirty dollars in return for society can be expected.
Lastly, she said that Businesses cannot succeed in a society that fails to protect environment.
PHDCCI President Sanjay Aggarwal also highlighted, “Ecological Restoration in areas of environmental degradation will not only help us reverse global biodiversity losses but also promote recovery of ecosystem services.
“The goal should be revival of economies while aligning pro-nature growth outlook in line with Sustainable Development Goals and upcoming global framework on biodiversity.
“There is a necessity for synchronized, unified, computable, sector-specific and multi-lateral action in the coming years if we have to achieve our global economic powerhouse targets,” said Aggarwal.
Environment and Life, both, are interrelated where one without the other cannot exist, added Dr J P Gupta, Chair, Environment Committee, PHDCCI.
He also underlined the deep routed Indian Philosophical thought. “Humans are not supposed to exploit the environment and a Balance has to be maintained in nature. The Five Elements Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space are available in abundance for all, but it is up to us to not exploit it,” said Dr Gupta. #environment #climate #investment #business #ecosystem /fiinews.com
