Global groups join Maritime Park on Willingdon Island
Cochin Shipyard Limited is expected to commission the International Ship Repair Facility (ISRF) in FY 2021-22, having start construction on 17 Nov 2017, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said in a year-end project review on 29 Dec 2020.
More than 95% of the piling works, 50% of the deck concreting and 80% of the dredging activities are completed for the first phase of the facility.
Ten global maritime groups have already partnered with CSL for setting up their units in the Maritime Park in the first phase. The Park near the ISRF on Willingdon Island has been set up to turn Kochi into a maritime hub.
CSL expects to position Kochi as a major ship repair hub with major operations in the present ship repair dock, coupled with increased capacities that would be available when the ISRF is commissioned, said the Ministry.
CSL also expects to commission a new dry dock in FY 2022-23 for ship repair, especially focusing on building specialized and technologically advanced vessels such as LNG Carriers, Aircraft Carriers of higher capacity, jackup rigs, drillships, large dredgers and repairing offshore platforms and larger vessels.
Meanwhile, the Ministry has released Rs.29.02 crores to Indian shipyards for 12 vessels in FY 2018-19 under the Shipbuilding Financial Assistance Policy for contracts signed during a 10-year period 2016-2026. Further Rs.26.97 crores for 7 vessels was released in FY 2019-20 and Rs.5.06 crores was released for 3 vessels in 2020-21.
The Ministry said it is in discussions with relevant authorities in other countries for shipbuilding at Indian yards while all major ports in the country have been directed to procure or charter tug boats which are only made in India. #makeinIndia #investment #construction #shipping #maritime /fiinews.com
